Coty Fragrances – A Brief History

Jennifer Lopez, Sarah Jessica Parker, Celine Dion,are huge names in the entertainment industry, and if there is one thing that these huge names have in common, it is the fact that they all turn to Coty when it comes to smelling good. Coty has been in the fragrance industry for so many years already; in fact, it has over a century’s worth of experience under its belt. Today, it is dubbed as the leading manufacturer of fragrances for both men and women that are mass-produced and marketed all over the world.

Over the years, Coty has certainly experienced a lot of significant changes in both ownership and management. Needless to say, all of these have panned out well for the company since it remains as huge as it has ever been. However, this successful story is not without its humble beginnings still.

Born Joseph Marie François Spoturno, François actually opted to take the name of Coty for his own last name since this sounded and looked more French to him. The name Coty was actually a modification of his mother’s maiden name. Coty started his passion by selling mere essences that he derived from flowers located in the vicinity of Grasse. Once these essences were captured, Coty then took these and peddled them off to barbers all over Paris. However, it was his marketing skills that really paved the way for Coty’s success in the worldwide market. He was also quick to realize that the bottle in which his perfume was packaged in influenced the marketability of his products. It was because of this, that he had his perfume bottles designed by René Lalique, one of the greatest ceramists during his time.

It was in the year 1904 when François Coty developed his first ever fragrance, which was La Rose Jacqueminot. 1905 saw the release of L’Origan. But it was Chypre in 1917 that is hailed as one of the greatest successes in Coty’s career.

Other products in his product line include Imprevu, Styx, Wild Musk, Sweet Earth, and Stetson. To this day, Coty’s products remain a strong favorite amongst many men and women all over the world, as well as the celebrities that light up our silver screens.

History of Fragrance Perfume

When it comes to creating a great impression of yourself there are a number of factors that matter. This includes your personality, how you put together your outfit, and even your smell. Women have known for many generations that a great smell can help to attract other people. For this reason, finding the perfect fragrance is one of the best ways to show off your personality and your unique style.

There are a number of different scents in the perfume available to buy, made by many different people. Some of these have been in the business of perfume for a long time, and others decided to get into it to take advantage of the growing market. In fact, perfume can be traced as far back in history as ancient Egypt. This was the first culture ever to make perfume popular, and it was used as a weekly treatment on the skin with a mixture of herbs and oils.

In ancient Egypt, bathing also became ritualized. Applying perfume was simply part of the ceremonies. It was held so highly, that in the ancient Egyptian culture perfume was even put into the tombs of those who had died – something that they would carry with them into the afterlife. Perfumed were usually kept in stunning containers, including those made from stone, pottery and even gold. Perfume was an important part of the process of embalming. Most of the fragrances used in those times came from plants and spices with oil – including sandalwood, ginger and jasmine. Many were sent from India.

Egyptian women, such as Nefertiti and Cleopatra, that have been celebrated throughout history used perfume as a way of making themselves more popular and more attractive. They used perfume almost every day so that it would soon become something forever associated with ancient Egypt. This use of perfume by the Egyptians was also seen in the Romans and the Greeks, all of which had their own ways of using the product. The Romans wore perfume as part of their bathing rituals, applying it as many as several times a day. They even used it on animals and various materials within their homes. In Greece they were said to have used the first perfume in a liquid formulation.

The first people to make use of a process known as distillation were Arabs, and this process is still being used today. This simply means the way in which the oils are extracted from flowers. Once perfume become popular in Europe it was destined to be popular forever. It was used in many different ways and through many different fashions in both France and England, most notably as part of the upper class social circles and amongst the royal family.

Today, the fragrance we use has so much variety and is available from so many different places that this would have been hard to envisage in ancient Egypt. We now pay very high prices to get our hands on some of the most popular designer scents, in many different types of beautiful bottle. Over time perfume has evolved, but it has always been popular and remained true to its humble start.

Perfume balms and oils were first used by the ancient Egyptians. The Egyptians placed extreme emphasis on cleanliness, hygiene, beauty and fashion, as well as rituals and religious practices. Plants were one of the materials used in creating scented oils; rose and peppermint were two of these. This formed an unguent which was rubbed onto the skin – a very practical way of prolonging the scent`s smell on the body. The Egyptians also used various props in religious ceremonies and at parties. Improvements in chemistry in the 1800`s, specifically here in organic chemistry, began the journey to present day abundance and the significance of perfume. These advances were particularly ground breaking as they canceled the need to obtain costly and rare materials for fragrance. Grasse, France quickly became an oasis for perfume creation. The leather workers in the region were some of the crucial figures in Grasse, as they had knowledge of smells and did not enjoy the leather making odors of their job. They continuously searched for ways to reduce and cover those smells.

There is a perfume museum in Cologne, France, which is perhaps even more influential in the perfume world than Grasse. There is even an awards ceremony annually for perfumes called the FiFi Awards. There are many economical, long lasting, designer, and different formulations available in today`s perfume.

Parfum is the term for the perfume containing the highest concentration of essence in fragrance. Parfum de toilette is a little less stronger than parfum. Eau de parfum (EDP) is lighter than both, yet lasts for a relatively long time with a cheaper price tag. Eau de toilette (EDT) has an even lighter amount of essence, and is therefore suitable for daily wear. Eau de Cologne (EDC) has the lowest concentration of essence and more alcohol and water than the others. It is also the cheapest.

Current trends in the perfume field include easy access to multiple fragrance choices. This world is has grown to include thousands of products geared specifically to men as well. New research continues to search for possible ways to recreate pheromones, which are the natural attraction fragrances emitted by our bodies that attract the opposite sex. There is a giant market for pleasant and comforting scents in general – these are infusions of food and home smells, as well as candy inspired scents. Aromatherapy is being studied and utilized not only for its use in pleasing the senses, but for medicinal and healing properties as well.

Research continues in the area of smell influencing behavior – such as in the office or in customer purchases while shopping. Perfume and fragrance have been shown to influence behaviors and moods in many ways. Perfume will likely continue growing and changing as time goes on, and will endure as a lasting influence in history and the future.
